Before rushing in
Do some research
Look on the internet; visit websites and blogs that are dedicated to freelancers and note down ideas that will help you develop your project.
Define your skills
Make a list of everything that you want to do/accomplish, and set it down in writing. That’s your profile. Next, think of a selling point that will help set you apart from the competition. Be careful of saying you have expertise in multiple areas – not more than three areas will do. Finally, conduct a short telephone survey to ask potential clients what they think of your bid.
Draw up a business plan
If you don’t require heavy financial investment, which would mean long negotiations with your bank manager, then don’t force yourself to prepare a detailed business plan…simply make sure that your project will allow you to generate a turnover that will respond to your needs (see the APCE website – it’s well thought out)
If you mix up your turnover and your income, or gross and net, then don’t hesitate to seek advice from a professional accountant.
Immerse yourself
Join a group of freelancers, update your profile on social networking sites, and listen to the advice that they can give you. Develop working relationships with freelancers whose skills complement yours – this will be helpful when responding to certain project offers.
